Origin Story
GTP to FC
The Primus name and logo roared to life in 1987 with Primus Motorsports and their impressive, but short stint, in IMSA's GTP class with their Porsche 962. A great article about the team and their incredible success against the motorsports titans of the time can be found at Racer.com: https://racer.com/2017/03/18/retro-primus-motorsports-at-sebring-1987/
With Primus Motorsports exit from IMSA, the Primus name and logo was essentially no longer being used. In 1988, former crew member of the Porsche 962 team, Jon Baytos and brother Brad Baytos purchased a 1986 Van Diemen Formula Ford and started a race team. Like a boat, every race team needs a name, and Chris Kneifel was kind enough to give the Primus name and logo to Brad and Jon. Late in the 1988 season, Brad was given a seat in an F2000 car by Essex and with only a few months to qualify, made it to the SCCA Runoffs in his first year of competitive driving.
The race team evolved and in 1990, Primus became the United States' sole distributor for Van Diemen International, Ltd. race cars. Based in Snetterton, Norfolk, United Kingdom, Van Diemen became the largest manufacturer of bespoke racing cars in the World.
